About me

My name is Silvia and I am a ceramic artist and designer. All of my tableware is created and handmade by myself in my studio in Savignano sul Rubicone, a little town in the north of Italy, quite close to the Adriatic sea.

I graduated in Business Studies in 1994 and I’ve worked for 20 years as an accountant. Ceramic became a passion after a short raku workshop back in 2007. Since then, as a self taught person, I've been working in ceramic and porcelain sculpture and installations and exhibited in galleries and museums around the world. Have a look at www.silviagranata.it if you wish to know more.

At the beginning of 2019 times where mature to quit my office job and finally became a full time ceramic artist, still working on sculpture, but taking on utilitarian ceramics as well, as I love the cosy comfortable feeling of a beautiful home and wish to fill it with plenty of beautiful objects! That's why I create handmade ceramic and porcelain plates, bowls, pots, cups, vases and design objects.

I decided that clay had to be my means of expression as it is like I am: concrete, real, pragmatic and solidly connected to the ground and to a place that is my home, its shelter and protection. I love working and creating using my hands, and the possibility to forge almost any shape I have in my mind. I work mainly using the slab technique and I try to get the clay thinner and thinner in order to enhance translucency, light passing through my tableware, which is the characteristic I love the most in porcelain. My objects are always created leaving something to chance, like a crooked rim or a soft movement in the slab of clay, because I believe that clay itself will guide my pieces and make them unique.
