Grey porcelain kintsugi bowl. Kintsugi philosophy says that breakage and mending are valuable parts of a past which should not be hidden. Wounds and healing are part of our history, part of who we are. Every beautiful thing has an history to be shown. This makes a kintsugi bowl a very meaningful and profound object to be donated.
TECHNIQUES & MATERIALS This Kintsugi is my personal adaptation of the japanese technique. I use 22 carat gold leaf to treat every bowl that comes out damaged from my kiln. The delicate look and lightweight feel is achieved by using very thin slabs of porcelain. Each piece is carefully slab built using porcelain in my studio in Italy, glazed in transparent inside, sanded smooth outside and fired twice to 1255°. The clay I use is a high quality porcelain and is coloured with pigments by hands. Everything I use is food-safe. Please note that each plate is one of a kind and the photo represent the exact piece that I'm going to ship. WHY CHOOSING PORCELAIN Porcelain is highly resistant and tends to last much better over the years than standard ceramic. That is because porcelain is denser, more uniform and harder than ceramics. It is fired to higher temperature, giving high strength to the finished product and making it more durable, most crack-resistant, almost impossible to stain, and with no absorption problems therefore completely food safe. CARE FOR ENVIRONMENT Clay is a natural and long-lasting material, therefore environmentally friendly. It is part of our tradition and history as many everyday objects were made of clay since ancient times. Since I care about environment, I use recycled packaging when possible and ask you to re-use it.
